    McCutcheons at end March

The Australian Bridge Federation calculates and publishes the club's best improvers (in terms of the most masterpoints gained) for each masterpoint ranking. Click the link for the up-to-date full details of these McCutcheon rankings for our members.

For the three months to end March Peninsula's highest masterpoint earner was Hans van Weeren on 59.73 ahead of Peter Clarke on 52.88 and Alexander Cook on 37.42.

Congratulations to these three and also to our leaders in each masterpoint category, who are as follows:

    Improved furnishings and technology

The Club was fortunate to receive Australian government funding via grant under the Australian Stronger Communities Program. This is being used to assist with the purchase of both needed furniture and technology.

The furniture is expected to include additional chairs and side-tables, to replace the chairs we have borrowed from the Nelson Heather Centre and to complete equipping our playing room to 37 permanent tables. These additional tables should allow us to accommodate some of the growth in playing numbers we have experienced in recent years.

The new technology includes a second directing station at the eastern end of the playing room (for backup as well as allowing greater flexibility), a second large monitor display which will make it easier for our players to see notices and results and a few other smaller items.

    Farewell Sue Falkingham

As many of you will know, Sue is leaving Sydney at the end of this month to live in Tassie. I hope she has some winter woolies!

On behalf of the Director group I would like to thank Sue for her invaluable contribution to the Club. She has been a fountain of knowledge in the use of the technology required to run day to day sessions efficiently and professionally and has willingly given up her time to pass this knowledge on to the Director group.

She taken responsibility for running our monthly Tuesday night Swiss pairs in a highly professional manner. She has also regularly acted as a director available to play with “walk-ins”. Playing with a new partner and having responsibility for directing the session can be very stressful.

I wish Sue the very best.

    The club's event regulations

The Club plays under the latest NSWBA Tournament Regulations, adjusted where appropriate by supplementary regulations defined and published for particular events.

These supplementary regulations may be defined by the event organiser for national, state and other interclub events, and by the Tournament Sub-Committee for the club's own special events. They will normally be displayed on the Notice Board adjacent to the entry list for the event. Entry to the event assumes that players have read these rules and will abide by them.

    Anne's accreditation certificate

    Farewell Sue, welcome Anne!

Anne Small has received her ABF Teacher Accreditation certificate following her successful completion of the Accreditation Program.

Anne is a recent addition to the Bridge Education team and this is timely given the forthcoming departure of team member Sue Falkingham, one of our other accredited teachers.

Bridge Education team members with this accreditation are Cath Whiddon, Sue Falkingham, Vickie Busteed and now Anne Small. Teacher accreditation is an important part of Peninsula Bridge Club professional bridge education program.

    2018 State Mixed Pairs Qualifier

Congratulations to Lynn Baker and Col Dempster for winning the three week State Mixed Pairs qualifier event played on Thursday afternoons 8, 15 and 22 March. Despite a relatively poor last round, they finished on 165.81 just ahead of Barbara Gassmann and Patrick Starck on 165.12, and Lois and Terry Rothwell on 164.12, with these three pairs well ahead of the rest of the field led by Len Evershed and Patricia Giles on 154.50.

Having played in the event and having been chomped up and spat out by some of the boards, my esteem for those who did well is high.

Peninsula will pay for the top 4 willing pairs to play in the NSWBA State Mixed Pairs Championship to be played on 26-27 May.

    GNOT day qualifier

The 2018 GNOT day qualifier finished today with the Small team (Margaret and Michael Draper, Anne Small and Hans van Weeren) triumphant at the close.

The event comprised a seven match round robin followed by a two match knock-out with the adjacently placed team (results here listed in two lines). The Small team was well behind the Ho team (Alexander Cook, Alan Davies, Vivien Eldridge and Robin Ho) at the end of the round robin stage but managed to win the knockout. The top two teams are eligible for free entry in the GNOT Metropolitan Final.
