Now updated with our target climate range! A highly experienced director once confided that the hardest part of the job was the air conditioning decision. We seem to have our fair share of different opinions.
The committee discussed what could be done and concluded that we can never make everyone happy. Not only do different people feel the temperature, humidity and air movement differently, but the temperature and air movement can also vary within the clubhouse (and of course is dependent on which doors and windows are open).
To reduce but not eliminate the perhaps inevitable arguments the committee has adopted the following approach:
- We have purchased and installed a few thermometers and a hygrometer to provide an objective measure of temperature and humidity - there are now two thermometers on the walls and a combined thermometer/hygrometer at the director's desk
- Based on observations over a month in the middle of summer we have decided that our consensus target band will be 23-25 degrees (with some director allowance for breeze and humidity)
- Stay with the practice that only Committee or Directors operate the air conditioning - and with doors and windows closed when the air conditioning is operating
- We are checking that the regular maintenance of the air conditioning equipment and filters have been done
- Encourage those that feel the cold to come equipped with extra warmth (in line with practice at some major bridge congresses)
- Check whether we need to highlight certain tables as colder or breezier than average
- Acknowledge that we will not please everyone
We hope this helps keep the focus on enjoyable bridge as much as possible.
