Trumps won the 2018 Margaret Smale Sydney North Interclub Teams Challenge played on Sunday 11 March at Peninsula Bridge Club, on 16 points just ahead of North Shore Bridge Club on 14. Peninsula came third on 7, ahead of Manly Leagues on 5 and the All-Stars on 3.

Peninsula won Category C when Jennifer Ardill, Suzanne Cole, and Lois and Terry Rothwell pipped the leading North Shore team with 86.86VP ahead of 86.39.

The event is named in honour of Margaret Smale who played at bridge clubs across northern Sydney from the early 1990s. Margaret served on the Peninsula Bridge Club committee and as a director for many years. She was also one of the driving forces behind PBC acquiring a dedicated facility – the spacious, airy room which PBC bridge players are lucky enough to enjoy every day. An excellent bridge player herself, Margaret was always a very encouraging mentor to new and upcoming players.
The Margaret Smale Interclub Teams Challenge rewards success across the full range of players, from novices to those playing at open level. The teams are divided into categories based on experience, and all teams finishing in the top half of their field earn points for their club.
Sunday’s event drew teams from Trumps, Manly Leagues Club, North Shore Bridge Club and Peninsula Bridge Club, as well as two All Stars teams from Narrabeen Bridge Club and North Sydney Leagues Club. The day belonged to Trumps who lived up to their name, taking home the trophy.
We were delighted to welcome guests Richard Douglas, Chair of the NSW Bridge Association, and Wynne Murray, Margaret Smale’s daughter, who presented the trophy to the winning team.
