The Club was fortunate to receive Australian government funding via grant under the Australian Stronger Communities Program. This is being used to assist with the purchase of both needed furniture and technology.
The furniture is expected to include additional chairs and side-tables, to replace the chairs we have borrowed from the Nelson Heather Centre and to complete equipping our playing room to 37 permanent tables. These additional tables should allow us to accommodate some of the growth in playing numbers we have experienced in recent years.
The new technology includes a second directing station at the eastern end of the playing room (for backup as well as allowing greater flexibility), a second large monitor display which will make it easier for our players to see notices and results and a few other smaller items.
As many of you will know, Sue is leaving Sydney at the end of this month to live in Tassie. I hope she has some winter woolies!
On behalf of the Director group I would like to thank Sue for her invaluable contribution to the Club. She has been a fountain of knowledge in the use of the technology required to run day to day sessions efficiently and professionally and has willingly given up her time to pass this knowledge on to the Director group.
She taken responsibility for running our monthly Tuesday night Swiss pairs in a highly professional manner. She has also regularly acted as a director available to play with “walk-ins”. Playing with a new partner and having responsibility for directing the session can be very stressful.
I wish Sue the very best.
Meet our “Go-to Girls” from the Peninsula Bridge Ed Team - Anne Small, Jen Ardill and Susan Jensen.
Anne is available for questions about hands after a Wednesday DAY or Friday DAY session (if she is there playing or directing).
Jen is back helping in our supervised sessions.
Susan can help buddy up any of our supervised session players who want to try a regular duplicate with an experienced member to introduce them & guide them through the transition.
Join your friends in our members only teams day on Thursday 12 April. This one-day event comprises only five matches running from 10am to about 4pm. Come early with a savoury or sweet food offering and share morning tea before play starts.
Last year this Members' Teams was won by the Small team (Anne Small, Vivien Eldridge, Michael Draper and Margaret Draper) ahead of the Bailey team (Ian Bailey, Lynn Baker, John Rogers and Margaret Rogers). In 2018 the second prize will go to the best remaining team with a less than 100MP team average.
This is a fun and friendly teams event, with a competitive edge as is normal with bridge. Come and enjoy the day. Check all the event details, including how to enter on the Club Noticeboard. You can use the entry list to enter as a pair if you are looking for team mates.
Trumps won the 2018 Margaret Smale Sydney North Interclub Teams Challenge played on Sunday 11 March at Peninsula Bridge Club, on 16 points just ahead of North Shore Bridge Club on 14. Peninsula came third on 7, ahead of Manly Leagues on 5 and the All-Stars on 3.
Check the overall club results, the detailed round by round results, and the event photo album to view and add photos to the 2018 event photo library or browse to http://bit.ly/2018InterclubTeams.
Peninsula won Category C when Jennifer Ardill, Suzanne Cole, and Lois and Terry Rothwell pipped the leading North Shore team with 86.86VP ahead of 86.39.
In the interests of preserving the history of our club, we have attached two documents that illustrate the early stages of our significant bridge education program:
The Peninsula Bridge Club started from humble beginnings in the 1960s with 1 January 1967 deemed to be the Foundation date and 1967 the year that really saw the Club get going together with its formal establishment.
The Early Days - 1960s
In the early 1960s, Bill Bale, his wife and Ada Sloman travelled to Lindfield for their bridge - a long journey - and explored the possibilities of a local venue. Ada was a member of the Newport Women’s Bowling Club and gained permission to use one of their rooms. So in September 1966, an informal bridge group commenced - the Peninsula Bridge Circle.
With a major interclub teams event, the 2018 Margaret Smales Sydney North Interclub Teams Challenge, coming up on the second week of March it is time to wash the tablecloths.
Volunteers were sought and many members answered. It is a notable strength of our club that all members who are able contribute to the workings of the club - helping us to have table fees well below other comparable clubs.
We and the interclub event will all benefit from the clean tablecloths.
