This FAQ item explains how to add a link to a file (such as a pdf results file) that you upload to the site.
Adding a link to a file that you upload to the site would take place in the middle of creating or editing a content item, such as an article or event - see the separate FAQs Create/edit an article and Create/edit an event..
To link a file that you have uploaded or want to upload:
- Select/highlight 'the words' that you want to use as the link and then click on the Insert/Edit File editor icon, generally located to the right of the lowest line of editor icons. This will open a separate pop-up file manager type window that allows you to either select an existing file on the webserver or to upload a new file (or files) from your computer.
- If you want to upload a new file (or files) from your computer, click on the Upload option on the right hand side of the window (about half way down). This opens a new file manager type window that views the folders and files on your computer. Browse to and select the appropriate file or files Navigate to the appropriate folder using the folder tree structure displayed on the bottom left of this window - where the file you want is located or where you will upload it. If you need to create a new folder use the New Folder icon to the left of the Question Mark in the middle right of this pop-up window.
- 3. If you wish to upload a file (or files) click on the Upload icon to the left of the Question Mark in the middle right of this pop-up window. This will open an Upload window from where you can browse your computer's files to select the one or ones you want, and then upload them to the site before closing this window.
- 4. Select the file that you want to link by clicking on the appropriate file name that appears in the bottom central part of the File Manager window and the appropriate URL will appear in the URL field. At this point you may be asked whether you wish to change the link text you chose to highlight with the file name - normally you would say No to this question. Now click on the Insert button on the bottom of the dialog box to insert the link to the uploaded file and close the File Manager window.
- 5. You will now see that your selected link text in the authoring window is now a link. If you have more files to link you would now repeat the process above.
- 6. When your content item is complete and saved it would be worthwhile previewing it on the site and checking that the link works as you intended. While the above process may at first seem complex, it becomes second nature.
