As many people know, John and I met at the Gold Coast Congress eight years ago, so it's always somewhat of a sentimental journey for us, despite the fact that we haven't really distinguished ourselves in the past, although John, playing with his original team, had come second in the Restricted.
This time we played with Sue and Ken Moffitt, a really interesting couple who live in the Northern Territory. Sue has achieved local fame for writing a book called "Darwin in the Wet".We met them at the Darwin Congress last year, and, as we all got on well, decided to play together.
During the afternoon tea break on Saturday 25 February our President, Sarah Young, acknowledged the contribution that Jen Ardill has made to the Club since she first joined six years ago.
Jen has not only learnt the game of Bridge herself, but also been part of the Bridge education team, encouraging and helping new members to learn the game. She has run the library effectively and obtained the latest books for us to borrow. She has played with different partners and mentored many.
Her sense of humour and presence at the sessions will be missed, as Jen is leaving us and moving to Victoria in order to be closer to her family. Cake and flowers were the order of the day. Good luck and thank you, Jen.
Margaret and John Rogers together with the Moffits from Darwin won the Intermediate Teams at the Gold Coast Congress. This is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations! There were 94 teams participating in this event.
Peter Clarke and Hans van Weeren were second in the Ivy Dahler Restricted Swiss pairs.
Alan Davies and Vivien Eldridge with their team mates Kevin Dean and Bob Hunt won the best mixed team in the Intermediate Teams.
Anne Small and Cath Whiddon are the 2017 Club Pairs Champions. Well done to them both!
The Runners up were Jim Fairley and Bob Whittaker. In third place were Ray Bragge and Ken Watson.
Many Peninsula players are heading for the Gold Coast Congress. It started on Saturday 18 February. Good luck and I hope the sun shines on their cards!
It was wonderful to see the turn out for the Invitation Teams event - more teams than ever, and lots of visiting players from other clubs.
