    Charity Day

The Charity day was a great success thanks mostly to the efforts of Sue Riley. Over $3000 was collected.

Thanks also to Rachael Loomes and Wendy Starkie and everyone else who contributed to the day in all sorts of ways. There are too many to mention.

    Coffs Congress 2014

A few members from Peninsula attended the Coffs Congress. Lyn Smith and Cath Whiddon were second in the under 1000 mp category of the Open Pairs. This is Cath's account :

We started at table 67, won & moved to table 14- where we met and defeated David Beauchamp& Marlene Watts. Moved to table 11 and successfully competed against Paul Lavings and partner. Next was table 8 & a win against Stephen Lester & Jan Cormack. (All Aust and NZ CHAMPIONS. & reps at world bridge comps). Our best effort was table 3, in 6th place, but a loss there, followed by a win against John Mottram and Liz Quittner and a final win, left us feeling like we had played some great bridge & really gained from the experience.

In the Open Pairs Lyn & Cath were 32nd, Lynn Baker and Vivien Eldridge were 45th. Lesley Treasure and Yvonne Perkins came 9th and Ian Hoschke and Sylvia Bellingham 25th in the restricted Pairs. In the Open Teams Lynn Baker, Vivien Eldridge, Ron Smith and Anne Small were 44th overall and Cath Whiddon, Lyn Smith and Helen Blewett were 63rd. The Hoschke Team were 21st in the Restricted teams.

    2014 Swiss pairs Congress

54 pairs participated in the Swiss Pairs on Sunday and a good number of Peninsula members played and did very well. The winners were Michael Wilkinson and John Newman with Terry Bodycote and Paul Weaver in second place. Pat Cummings and Margaret Draper came third overall. Rachael and Maurice Loomes were 6th and Jim Rothwell and Peter Clarke were 8th. We had a bit of excitement with an unscheduled evacuation due to a little fire in the oven. However it all ended well and director Tony Howes remained calm throughout.

As usual the members put on a great spread. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a successful event.

    State Mixed Pairs

A few players from Peninsula attended the State Mixed Pairs finals at the NSWBA on the weekend. There was a distinct lack of distinction! Margaret and John Rogers were the only pair who managed to achieve more than 50% in the qualifying rounds. The Swiss Pairs on Sunday was not much better. We all had a torrid time against quite strong opposition and managed not to distinguish ourselves in any way at all. Lori and Jeanette were becoming so comfortable at table 43 that they were thinking of adding a patio and changing the curtains! Hopefully we all learned something from this experience and managed to enjoy the games regardless.

    Bridge for Brains 2014

Peninsula Bridge Club participated in the Bridge for Brain Research Challenge on Monday. It was a great success with over $1700 being raised for Neuroscience Research Australia. Thanks to all those who helped especially Rachael Loomes and Sue Riley. Also thanks to all the members who contributed to the afternoon tea and bought raffle tickets.
