We are spotlighting Verl Lawrence this month. She does not need much of an introduction.
Verl is a long-time resident living on the Northern beaches. She was born and raised in Newcastle, and lived there until she married at 21 years. She then lived in Tamworth, where her first son was born. Her husband was transferred to Sydney, where she has lived ever since.
She has been playing bridge for 30 years. She was a student of John Roberts who taught bridge at Manly Warringah Bridge Club.
Verl can be seen playing bridge, on average, four times a week. Her children have not followed suit, though. She explains that attracting younger members is difficult, as there are so many other exciting things to do!
When asked, does she have a favourite contract, she says no. She would like to see a scheme where you play all the players, not play all the boards!
Verl has taken on many roles on the Bridge Club Committee and also taken on volunteer duties in her 27 years of being a member – Tea Lady, Masterpoint Secretary, Director and Congress Director, Vice-President, President and Chief Director for 17 years.
She has had many special memories and successes playing bridge, such as winning the Interclub Trophy for Pairs, Club Individual Championships, Club Team Championship, Padman Trophy and a few other Club Championships. She is a Life Member of the Club (she has approximately 1400 MP).
Other hobbies? Used to be tennis, but now it is minding grandchildren and keeping up with a very large family.
