Directors attending the Sunday workshop
On the weekend of 9-10 August, Peninsula Bridge Club in conjunction with BridgeNSW, held two Directors Workshops led by John McIlrath (chair of the BridgeNSW Directing Committee). These attracted directors from 8 clubs seeking to improve their directing confidence and competence - twelve PBC directors attended.

Here is one participant's report:

"I attended the recent Bridge NSW Directors Workshop at Peninsula Bridge Club. John McIlrath was the presenter, and his delivery was warm and reinforced his message that good directing is about attracting and keeping bridge players. Though I am not a director, I came to learn more about directing as I will soon be taking over as the Convenor of the bridge club I belong to in the Northern Beaches.

Both days were enriching. On the first day, we focused on running competitions more effectively, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the various table movements available, both alone and in combination, for high-level events. It was enlightening to learn that the Bridge Committee are the one who should tell the director what they hope to achieve in each session, particularly about movement and session goals.

The second day addressed improving regular club sessions, which I found especially relevant for my future role. Interacting with other Bridge Club volunteers from the local area was a highlight, strengthening our shared sense of community. David Farmer was outstanding in keeping the workshop on schedule and encouraging regular breaks, which enhanced camaraderie and gave us more chances to connect.

Both days finished with wine and cheese, offering a relaxed way to discuss ideas and build relationships. I highly recommend these locally-based education sessions held in cooperation with Bridge NSW, as they not only develop our practical skills but also reinforce bonds across the local bridge community.

Peninsula Bridge Club was a gracious host and deserves recognition for taking the initiative to lead in our area. I hope clubs throughout NSW continue to collaborate, support each other, and learn together.

Thank you to John McIlrath for his many years of dedicated service to Bridge in NSW, which has contributed significantly to the strength of our club networks."
