In an impressive comeback from a poor start the Davies team managed to win the three week 2019 State Open Teams qualifier in the very last match. Apologies to the Duggin team...
Ten teams battled it out, over three Thursdays in May. Director Brian Soutter gave us a nine match round robin, with three matches per week. Unlike a Swiss movement this completely fair movement makes it hard to know who the interim leaders are, and a number of teams made it harder still with volatile performances.
After being 9th out of ten after the first three matches, the Davies team (Alan Davies, Vivien Eldridge, David Farmer and Patrick Starck) held their nerve and clawed their way back up the rankings. Only a decisive last round win took them to first place over the long term leading Duggin team (Jocelyn Bertram, Chris Duggin, Rodney and Sue Scotford). The Baker team (Lynn Baker, Anne-Marie Hazell, Alexis Ngan and Gordon Rudd) came third. The top two teams win a free entry into the NSWBA Metropolitan Finals. Other teams can enter but need to pay for their entry.
