Our first clubhouse individual competition for our blue or open players since COVID took place over four Thursday afternoons in November and December, with the best three individual scores counting, This event was interrupted by the Club Teams Championships during the last three weeks of November.
Congratulations to Jim Fairley who won by a small margin ahead Lynn Baker with Susan Jensen and Audrey Coyle coming third equal.
After six grueling weeks and a good deal of chopping and changing amongst the leaders, the winners have finally emerged. As promised, a bottle of (fairly) decent red wine (2016 Shottesbrooke Single Vineyard Shiraz) goes to each of the following:
Blue Division (Open): Leslie Treasure and Carolyn Dowling
Red Division (U120): Sue Evershed and John Simmonds
Green Division (U20): Neil Mitchell and John O’Riordan
Details of the results are to be found here.
This brings to an end the series of Cumulative events we have been holding every Tuesday since June. We shall start a new series later in January but, in the meantime, there will be stand-alone events for Open and Under 100 fields.
By way of recap, here are the winners of all the events this year:
Our first clubhouse competition for our green or novice players since COVID took place over four Friday mornings in November, with the best three individual scores counting, While this was an individual event, it seems most players played with the same partner for all three or four weeks.
Congratulations to the winners, Irina Taran and Bill Davis, ahead of Penny Hayes and Di Garstang and Phillip Mitchell and John O'Riordan.
Nine teams battled for the 2020 Club Teams Championship over three weeks in November, with congratulations to the Smith team (Linda Abbenbroek, Jan McLennan, Anne Small and Lyn Smith) who emerged triumphant ahead of the Whiddon team (Alan Davies, Vivien Eldridge, David Farmer and Cath Whiddon) and the Treasure team (Yvonne Perkins, Lois Rothwell, Terry Rothwell and Leslie Treasure). For many competitors this was the first time back to the clubhouse - it was good to see them there.
Our external director, Ronnie Ng, ran an American Whist teams movement ensuring that all teams played each other over the three weeks. This was new to many players but proved to be a good choice with 9 teams over three sessions. However it proved too much for our normal website results display service. Consequently the results are linked here:
Melbourne Cup 2020 at Peninsula Bridge club was marked by teamwork and fun. Members enjoyed a memorable day with good bridge, good company and a great race, peppered with music, games, and fascinating headwear. Thanks to everyone who helped make this day such fun.
This year's winners of the Charlie Mitchell Shield run on Sat 31st October are Yvonne Perkins and Faye Carnonovale. Congratulations.
It is a Red point, single session event and is in memory of stalwart past member, Charlie Mitchell. The shield was donated by Patricia and Ian Giles
Charlie Mitchell was a President, Director, Mentor and Life Member of our great club. He died in2002 and survived by his Life and Bridge partner Lilian.
The Over 50 Division of the October Online Pairs resulted in a photo-finish with less than 0.4 points separating the first three finishers. Lynn Baker and Jim Stewart won by a short head from Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies with Lois and Terry Rothwell an even shorter head behind in third place.
In the Under 50 Division, Lyn Talmont and Susan Eason faltered a bit at the last fence but their consistent form over the earlier jumps carried them through to a comfortable win over Christine Marcroft and Lidy Seysener with the Colenbrander brothers a respectable third.
Congratulations to the winners and place-getters and, indeed, to everyone who took part. You can see the results here.
We will have a one-off all-comers event next Tuesday (while an even bigger horse race takes place) but we are planning another flagship cumulative online event for Tuesdays in November and early December. There will be red points on offer and, so that everybody has a chance, there will be three Divisions, based on Masterpoints as at Sept 30, 2020: Under 20, Under 150 and Open. Look out for more details here and in your Inbox!
