On Sunday 8 March, Peninsula Bridge Club hosted the Margaret Smale North Metro Interclub Teams Challenge.
The event is named in honour of Margaret Smale, who played at bridge clubs across northern Sydney from the early 1990s. Margaret served on the Peninsula Bridge Club committee and as a director for many years. She was also one of the driving forces behind PBC acquiring a dedicated facility – the spacious, airy room which PBC bridge players are lucky enough to enjoy every day. An excellent bridge player herself, Margaret was always a very encouraging mentor to new and upcoming players.
Sunday’s event drew teams from Trumps, Manly Leagues Bridge Club, Balgowlah/Dee Why RSL Bridge Club, North Shore/East Lindfield Bridge Club and Peninsula Bridge Club. The day belonged to North Shore/East Lindfield Bridge Club who were the overall winners.
The Challenge rewards success across the full range of players, from novices to those playing at open level. The teams are divided into categories based on experience, and all teams finishing in the top half of their field earn points for their club.
Division A was won by North Shore/East Lindfield (Helen Lowry, Julianne Rocks, Mischa Solar and Frances Lyons), followed by Peninsula (Jennifer Ardill, Peter Clarke, Anne Small and Hans van Weeren).
Division B was also won by North Shore/East Lindfield (Ian Maclaren, Elain Dignan, Julie Guthrie and Mark Guthrie) with Manly (Jeanette Weaver, Loraine Neville, Leslie Treasure and Yvonne Perkins) in second place.
Division C was won by North Shore/East Lindfield (Pauline Martin, Ming Li, Wenjie Liu and Ming Xie), Peninsula (Jim Rothwell, Terence Rothwell, Cassandra Mitchell and Clare Filmer Ramsay) coming in second.
North Shore/East Lindfield took out first and second place in Division D – winner was team Jann Cathels, Narelle Clark, Susan Feeney and Kathryn Stewart, followed by team Robyn Rogers, Michael Bishop, Sarah Seldon and Denzil Seldon.
We were delighted to welcome as our special guests Margaret Smale’s daughters, who presented the trophy to the winning team.
Our thanks to convener Annegrete Kolding and Vivien Eldridge for organising the very successful event, and John McIlrath, who filled the very important role of director.
