The Call-In Fill-In scheme is one of the ways Peninsula Bridge Club helps players find partners.
Who it supports
- New players and visitors looking to get to know a regular session and in doing so to meet other players and find their own partners, and
- Regular session players whose regular partner is temporarily ill or away (or maybe there was a communication failure about the partner being available for the session).
If this describes you, let the session director know when you arrive that you are looking for a partner. They, or a delegate, will wait till about 5-10 minutes before the session start time to see if another unpartnered player can be paired with you. If not, they will ring our list of local call-in volunteers to see if someone can come in to play with you. A call-in player may take 10-20 minutes (so grab a cuppa or chat with your table opponents) and would normally join you during the first round.
Enjoy the game! If you are new to the session we hope you will enjoy meeting the other players and they can assist you find a regular partner. The players or the director can also introduce you to our other methods you can use to find partners (also described on our website) such as
- Pianola Partner Finder (for all sessions),
- Use of the club’s booking sheet (for all sessions),
- Some sessions when the director is available to play in, and
- Some sessions when a player has volunteered to be a ‘matchmaker’.
Would you be a great Call-In volunteer?
If you can join a session within 20 minutes and are willing and generally available to be called in to play at a session with an unpartnered player, we would love to add you to our Call-In volunteer list. You might make the day for a new visitor to our club. It might also suit you if you are interested in finding regular partners for that session.
You would play for free. You can always say no if it doesn't suit you on any particular day. You can change the sessions you nominate. The director or their delegate will check you are not already playing/booked in for the session.
If you are happy to become a Call-In volunteer, email David Farmer on
Thank you for considering helping the club in this way.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What if it doesn’t suit me when I am called?
You are not committed. If you don’t answer or say no, the director will try to find someone else. - What do I do if my regular partner is unavailable?
You have choices! Either come to the session and let the director know you are looking for a partner, OR if it is for a long time, you may want to volunteer to be a Call-In volunteer for that session. - Is there a limit on the number of times a player can use the system?
Yes. To ensure the scheme remains focused on supporting those in its target groups and is not over-used, there is a limit of 3 consecutive times an unpartnered player can use the scheme for each session. Reached the limit? Register as a Call-In Volunteer! - Do I have to play any system?
You won’t normally have much time to discuss bidding systems so start simple - perhaps the club’s Basic (or Green) System that we teach. Add extras only when you’ve had time to discuss them. - How do I find out more, change the sessions for which I selected as a Call-In volunteer, or provide feedback?
