Bridge Club News
The Bourke team of Carmel Bourke, Vona Hadfield, Hans van Weeren and Sarah Young are the club teams champions for 2016! Congratulations.
Second by 1 little IMP were the Farmer team comprising David Farmer, Cath Whiddon, Jocelyn Bertram and Lyn Smith.
Third were the Weaver team with Jeanette Weaver, Yvonne Perkins, Carolyn Dowling and Beryl Dawson.
We had a great competition with 14 teams battling it out over three weeks. Thanks to director Brian Soutter.
Peninsula players have been doing well all over the place. Heidi Colenbrander, Ray Hurst, Marieta Borthwick and Sarah Young won the Bathurst Novice Teams.
Trish Giles, Yvonne Perkins, Janice Steward and Sue Cooper won the Melbourne Cup Finesse Teams.
Anne Small, Vivien Eldridge, Cath Whiddon and Alan Davies were the best Peninsula team at the Margaret Smith Memorial teams day at the leagues club. Well done to all!!
We had a good time joining in the country-wide celebration of the Melbourne Cup. Jo Jarvis and Barb Anderson saved the day with last minute sweeps, Sue Riley organised a wonderful lunch, Bill and Trevor did a great job at the bar and everyone was a winner.
There were a lot of glamorous hats but Jen Ardill was judged to be first past the post. Peggy made a great jockey and her little whip kept her partner under control!
Sue Riley presented cheques for $4570 each to the MV Hospital Auxiliary and Warringah Pittwater Rural Fire Service. Peninsula Bridge Club's fund raising helps support these two very worthy local organisations. This is the largest donation the RFS has received!
The money is raised from the two charity days as well as from the second hand book recycling table and the plants (thanks to Robin Hoey).
I would like to thank Jackie at Hot Lox in Newport who generously donated a hamper of Aveda products (valued at $350) to be raffled.
Thanks to all those who made the lovely soups and desserts and donated to the hampers and bought raffle tickets.
The winners of the inaugural Under100mp Club Pairs Championship are Maggie Gibbs and Jen Ardill. Congratulations to them both.
There was a tie for second place between Susan Jensen and Annegrete Kolding (with an honourable mention of Sandie Rooke who was an excellent substitute) and Sarah Young and Hans van Weeren.
We were very pleased to have 24 pairs entering this competition in the first year.
The Australia Wide Open Pairs results and prize winners have been published. Click here for the full results and your personalised booklet. If your name is mentioned you will need to contact them to claim your prize. Vona Hadfield and Carmel Bourke managed to score a book prize for making 2HX on board 4. This is described as a unique top!
The PBC Committee organised an Expert Determination to resolve the Peninsula Club Pairs Championship dispute. The panel consisted of two eminent members of the bridge community – John McIlrath (director) and John Brownie (retired supreme court judge). The experts determined that the substitution of Lyn Smith for Maurice Loomes was legal and that there is no reason to think otherwise than that Rachael Loomes acted quite properly.
Accordingly the Club Pairs Championship result will be reinstated and Rachael and Maurice Loomes be declared the winners. The Determination can be read in full here.
