With a major interclub teams event, the 2018 Margaret Smales Sydney North Interclub Teams Challenge, coming up on the second week of March it is time to wash the tablecloths.
Volunteers were sought and many members answered. It is a notable strength of our club that all members who are able contribute to the workings of the club - helping us to have table fees well below other comparable clubs.
We and the interclub event will all benefit from the clean tablecloths.
As a club we communicate in lots of ways to our members and players, and potential members and players.
We need someone with digital/social media skills to help us out. Maybe you or a family member are interested in picking up real world experience in this space?
We can provide clear guidance as to our goals and needs but need someone with the skills, experience and time to make us effective when we promote our club and its lessons and events to the world.

Congratulations to Tony Aldridge and Trevor Laughton who had a great month at the bridge table in February, as did Esther Osborne and Elizabeth Wilson. They had the best regular pair results on a handicap basis.
We are trialing Pianola's calculations of regular partnerhips' results adjusted for their past performance or how well the pair usually do. We have set it that the pair needs to play at least three times within the month to remove some of the volatility in single session results. Our Swiss Pairs event on Tue 27 Feb was a great night with a turn-out of 14 pairs playing 4 rounds of 6 boards. The winners collecting a box of Swiss chocolate were Jennifer Ardill and Hans van Weeren. Congratulations!
Our guest expert presenter, Ed Barnes, lead a talk about ‘Bidding the minors after No-trump openings’. In particular, the game forcing use of splinter at the 3-level is an interesting option that is only rarely seen at our club. Check out his notes.

Peter Clarke and Hans van Weeren triumphed by winning, with team mates Jill Blenkey and Jeff Conroy from Newcastle, the Restricted Teams Championship.
More than 50 Peninsula members journeyed north to play in the annual ABF Gold Coast Congress played at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. They went with hopes and our club's best wishes for success and for a great time playing bridge, and some certainly triumphed.

These keen bridge players were awarded their most recent Bridge Ranking Certificates on Valentines Day.
In the back row it's Lynn Baker, Catherine Whiddon, Elizabeth Boustead, Judy Daniel and Detlef Volkmer. In the front row its Janelle Halliwell, Karl Puse and Cathy Nielsen. Also, Marieta Borthwick was awarded her Bridge Ranking Certificate.

Get ready for the Sloman Cup, a pairs competition named after one of the club's founders and played on the first Thursday of each month from March to December. The first session is on 1 Mar.
The pair with the highest cumulative percentage wins, with the best eight scores counted. Three substitutes are permitted, subject to the club's Substitute Rules which includes obtaining the director's approval prior to the session. The convener is Alan Davies.
Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies triumphed in the 2017 Sloman Cup, ahead of Beryl Dawson and Yvonne Perkins.
Trumps won the 2018 Margaret Smale Sydney North Interclub Teams Challenge played on Sunday 11 March at Peninsula Bridge Club, on 16 points just ahead of North Shore Bridge Club on 14. Peninsula came third on 7, ahead of Manly Leagues on 5 and the All-Stars on 3.

Peninsula won Category C when Jennifer Ardill, Suzanne Cole, and Lois and Terry Rothwell pipped the leading North Shore team with 86.86VP ahead of 86.39.
