Bridge Club News
It has now been decided not to have an extra fifth round of this competition due to there being the Bridge Education Anniversary clubhouse session on Sept 29th (there will be an open BBO session at 1.30), so the winners are the pairs with the best three results after the fourth round, which was directed by Heidi Colenbrander without the intervention of BBO or any other gremlins! Accordingly, I am pleased to announce the winners:
Open Division: Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies
Under 200 Division: Chris Dixon and Robert Gaven
Under 35 Division: Savitri Newman and Simon Hunter
Congratulations to all of these and to everyone who took part. A full listing of scores can be accessed here.
We shall be holding a similar cumulative event in October
The Over 50 Division of the October Online Pairs resulted in a photo-finish with less than 0.4 points separating the first three finishers. Lynn Baker and Jim Stewart won by a short head from Vivien Eldridge and Alan Davies with Lois and Terry Rothwell an even shorter head behind in third place.
In the Under 50 Division, Lyn Talmont and Susan Eason faltered a bit at the last fence but their consistent form over the earlier jumps carried them through to a comfortable win over Christine Marcroft and Lidy Seysener with the Colenbrander brothers a respectable third.
Congratulations to the winners and place-getters and, indeed, to everyone who took part. You can see the results here.
We will have a one-off all-comers event next Tuesday (while an even bigger horse race takes place) but we are planning another flagship cumulative online event for Tuesdays in November and early December. There will be red points on offer and, so that everybody has a chance, there will be three Divisions, based on Masterpoints as at Sept 30, 2020: Under 20, Under 150 and Open. Look out for more details here and in your Inbox!
The 2020 Michael Marks Shield was run at the clubhouse on the afternoon of Thu 27 Aug - the first special event to be run in our reopened COVID-Safe clubhouse. Red points were awarded.
Congratulations to Vince Cariola and Sue Hapek who won the event, narrowly over runners-up Heidi Colenbrander and Ray Hurst, and Linda Abbenbroek and Jan McLennan in third place.
Michael Marks was Peninsula's president for 4 years while we were arranging our first dedicated clubhouse connected to the Nelson Heather Centre. He was instrumental in negotiating a favourable long term lease agreement and designing the space we have.
Thanks to Cassandra Mitchell for convening and directing the event.
Many members of the club will remember Patricia MacDougal who was a member until 2017 and who recently turned 100 on the 10th of August. Congratulations and our best wishes.

Do you feel like you have been playing too much bridge lately? Try this poem for some light relief. It's in a pdf file.
Thankyou to George Somerville for contributing it. He doesn't know who wrote it.
We received the following letter from Karyn Nixon, Ada's daughter (click this link to see the order of service):
Dear David,
Thought you may like a copy of Mum's Order of Service.
Please thank everyone in the club for us for the many years of happiness you all gave Mum.
Mum's family and friends were first and foremost to Mum, followed closely by her bridge!
Kind regards,
Karyn.
The letter and order of service will be on the club noticeboard for a period of time.
The results after the final round of the PBC Online Pairs Championship held over the last three Tuesdays are:
Congratulations to Cath Whiddon and David Farmer for their resounding win in the Open Division . Runners-up were Ian Bailey and Peter Robinson with Annegrete Kolding and Sarah Young in a very creditable third place.
In the Under 300 Masterpoint Division Suzanne Cole and Noleen Cregan held on to win whilst Trish Thomson and Marieta Borthwick in second just kept at bay third place-getters Margaret Titley and Alison Pratten.
The Under 100 event was a real nail-biter. Bronwyn Neal and Simon Hunter won by a mere 0.35 points from Savitri Newman and Kay Parker whilst a blinder of a last round from Joan and Roger Perkins left them less than three points behind in third.
In the Under 15 Division Dee Rowe and Bob Allen maintained their consistent form to stay ahead of another fast-finishing couple, Leah and David Boyd. Neil Mitchell and John O’Riordan finished a respectable third.
There will be a third SALT teams event on BBO on Monday evenings at 7:30pm (or earlier) starting on September14th with 2 divisions (roughly U100 MPs and Open).
In the meantime, ATTENTION - novice and other 'newish' players!
We have participated in both of the two recent SALT competitions and highly recommend these events! As relatively new and inexperienced players, we have loved the opportunity to learn about team play in this friendly setting, and definitely intend to sign up again. It would be fabulous to have additional teams in the next competition, and we encourage you to join us.
